Hair loss can be devastating but finding the correct cause and treating it from the inside and out, one can have a full head of hair. Most importantly be the one to take action. You can just sit back and wait for a miracle to take place or you can take action and get your hair back. Be patient, educated and determined to correct it.
Causes of Hair Loss
Firstly let’s discuss the causes of hair loss. A number of things can cause excessive hair fall like
- Long illness or post surgery.
- Thyroid gland being overactive or under active.
- Having too much tea, coffee, deep fried food, spicy or sour food or smoking excessively can also increase acidity in the body and cause hair loss.
- Use of some medicines (especially without medical consultation) can cause hair loss too, as can some infections.
- Low blood circulation can also cause hair loss as the scalp does not receive adequate nourishment. Anemia and general weakness should be a telling sign.
- Typhoid and some other diseases can also cause sudden excessive hair fall.
- Stress, tension, anxiety are well-known causes.
- Heredity can also be an important factor.
- Hair loss can occur due to excessive shampooing and blow drying too.
- Hair loss can be caused due to habits like compulsive hair pulling (trichotillomania) or rubbing the scalp harshly.
- Inadequate intake of vitamins and food with high nutritional value.
Hair loss Prevention
Preventing hair loss is entirely in your hands. To start with
- Maintain a healthy diet with good vitamin rich nutritious food.
- Avoid alcohol, smoking, excessively oily and greasy food and excessively spicy and sour food.
- Have regular eating and sleeping habits to prevent hair loss.
- Exercise; avoid stress and staying up late.
- Maintain a good hair care regimen.
- Avoid chemical treatments on your hair.
- Do not wear your hair very tight as that can strain the hair roots and lead to hair loss.
- In case of hair loss due to a certain medication, consult your doctor and ask him to suggest an alternative.
- Maintain good hygiene of your scalp.

How soon after giving birth does hair loss occur? What about birth control pills?
I have a three month old and my hair has just started to fall out. I started taking Kariva about 3 weeks ago. I am not sure if my hair loss is due to the hormone changes from giving birth, or if it is from the birth control pill. If it is the birth control then I will discontinue to take it.
my baby is now 6 months old. my hair started to fall out at when she was around 3 months too. also, i’m not on birth control
Why was finasteride licensed for the treatment of hairloss rather than Dutasteride?
To receive an indication by the FDA (approved use), the drug manufacturers have to submit an ANDA (abbreviate new drug application), as well as fund multimillion dollar studies. If the manufacturer sees no additional monetary value in seeking additional indications for their drug products then they have no cause to expend millions of dollars.
What can I do to prevent hair loss when going through Chemotherapy?
Will something cold compressed against the scalp prevent hair loss?
There are a few things you can do based on what I’ve researched on the internet and in books:
1) Yes, as the last poster stated you can ‘cool’ your head. The most effective way is with special ‘caps’ that are made for this. And, depending on how long your chemo treatment is, to replace with a new one after a set time period. The problem is they are very expensive (hundreds of dollars each). You may be able to find them cheaper online (possibly) or ask if your treatment center has them (which is unlikely). The theorey is sound as they are even looking at ‘glove’ ones that keep the hands cold to prevent nerve damage from chemo drugs that cause damage that way
2) Use supplements. Of course, this is not approved yet by the FDA, however there are clinical trials going on. I’m referring only to the Maitake (mushroom) extract and especially the ‘D-Fraction’ line. It boosts the immune system and also has some anti-tumor properties especially in certain cancers like breast, prostate, etc. The best one I’ve seen so far is by Maitake Products out of NJ. Their website is www.maitake.com and have been doing since since 1991 and their products are used in several clinical trials. I wouldn’t recommend any of the other mushrooms because only Maitake D-Fraction has been proven effective when taken orally, whereas the others are only effective when injected. My mom’s doctor just reviewed this and said he sees no reason why she can’t take it and it might even help (Oncologist / ovarian cancer).
Also not everyone loses their hair with chemo, it depends on the drug being used and even then it varies for everyone.
Either way, don’t worry about it…it WILL grow back! I saw a humorous T-Shirt one day worn by a cancer patient that said "I’m Having a No Hair Day".
Take it as your ‘helmet’ during your ‘battle’ with whatever cancer you have. Good luck!

How much does hair transplant surgery cost ?
for hereditary hair loss. not a severe case .
Hair Restoration generally costs between $4000 and $5000 but can get as expensive as $12000 depending on the doctor, and how much you are getting to restored. The website I found mentioned that grafts cost between 3-10 but the number of hairs a doctor puts in per graft can very so it suggested seeing a doctor and asking him/her about it. If I was doing hair restoration I would see a few different doctors and weigh the pros/cons of each one to make your best decision. Who knows you may be able to mention the different prices to each doctor to see if you can get your favorite to lower his/her price!

Do hairloss-treatment products like Rogaine work?
And I don’t mean just making your hair look thicker. Or just prolonging the inevitable baldness. I mean, are there any hair-loss treatment products out there that actually makes hair grow back and look good?
I’m still pretty young, so I’m hoping there are.
There’s a pill – finasteride (brand name Propecia) that blocks the metabolization of testesterone into its active form, so it will help male-pattern hair loss. In a 5-year study of men with mild to moderate hair loss, 48% of those treated with Propecia (finasteride 1mg) experienced some regrowth of hair, and 42% had no further loss. Propecia is effective only for as long as it is taken; the hair gained or maintained is lost within 6-12 months of ceasing therapy
Anyone considered suicide from chemotherapy hair loss?
Why, it usually grows back thicker, worry about surviving the cancer first. If you do not like the side effects there are alternatives. Check the site below.
