PostHeaderIcon What are the negative effects of chemotherapy?

What are the side effects of chemotherapy other than temporary loss of hair?

Besides hair loss,
nausea, vomiting.
weakness.
hypersensitivity to any odors, (especially perfume).
Itching of skin.
Complete loss of appetite.
Profuse sweating.

Those are just some. Since your body is fighting the poison from the chemotherapy, you can expect almost anything, even failure of treatment. Just keep a positive attitude for the one who has opted chemotherapy. You might think about joining a support group for people with cancer. Since all chemotherapy is considered experimental, always have a positive attitude.

Best of love and health to you. I lost a mother and father to cancer.

PostHeaderIcon Is losing hair sign of cancer or u lose hair only when u undergo chemotherapy?

I have been losing a lot of hair, a lot means really a lot. it is not the normal number of common hair loss. I am afraid I have cancer or what…

You may be suffering from Alopecia Areata. It is a medical condition that you have no control over. You may see an excess of hair in your comb or brush, it may just come out in your hands when you run them through the hair.

This happened to me some years ago and I was prescribed a medication by my doctor and the hair loss stopped but not before I’d lost a huge patch that finally grew back. I’d check with my doctor on this before it gets any worse.

There are over the counter remedies but I’d not want to trust them unless the doctor approved them.

PostHeaderIcon Does AMINEXIL help my hair grow faster after chemotherapy?

Hey, I’m Nicole, I’m 17 and I just finished chemotherapy for Hodgkin’s Disease a week ago. I only have a few hairs left, but they’re very thin and frail and lost all colour. I used to have thick, dark, straight, beautiful hair, and I want it back fast, if possible.

I’m using Aminexil vials from Kerastase, and Kerastase Hair Loss Prevention Shampoo. Will these products help my hair grow back fast, or am I wasting my money on this expensive treatment for nothing?

(I also started taking SOLARAY Hair Blend, capsules. Do you have any idea if these have any effect?)

Thank you so much for your answer.

Love,
Nicole

Aminexil can help you get stronger, fuller & thicker hair. You can start using it after completing the last chemotherapy course of treatment. Research has shown that two treatments are adequate (42 bottles for 42 consecutive days / 6 weeks). This is said to be enough to prevent hair loss.

I’m not really sure on how effective Solaray Hair Blend is, but from their literature, they contain Saw Palmetto, which is a promising natural solution for hair loss.

PostHeaderIcon PLZ HELP-When is my HAIR supposed to FALL OUT during chemotherapy-thx?

I’m being treated with ABVD chemo for hodgkins lymphoma

what’s the average time for hair to fall out after the first session?

i’ve done two session till now…a first one followed by a second one 2 weeks after it…no sign of hair loss yet…will they fall?
thx

it varies from person to person. i did not lose mine with chemo, even though it was predicted. i did when i recently had radiation to the brain. i bought one wig but prefer my hats. if you lose it, have some fun with it. bald is beautiful. i got face paint so my grandchildren can decorate my head. any thing’s allowed to keep your spirits up. God bless you. i wish you the best with your treatment. ask your chemo nurse what she knows about the when or if of hair loss.

PostHeaderIcon Methotrexate and hair loss?

I’ve just begun Methotrexate for my lupus. I am on a low dose but am interested in the frequency/severity of hair loss from the drug. I have previously been through chemotherapy and am really scared of losing my hair again (I know this sounds superficial, but the methotrexate is to treat pain, not organ involvement–which is what I needed the chemo for).

Hair loss is relatively rare with smaller doses of Methotrexate treatment. However higher doses of Methotrexate can cause significant hair loss. This usually starts 3-4 weeks after the first dose of methotrexate, and may gradually worsen with subsequent doses of methotrexate.

PostHeaderIcon Hair Regrowth and Chemotherapy.?

I’m 19 years old and it has been a year since I had my last chemotherapy treatment. My hair is still much thinner on the top of my head than it was before my treatment. Does anybody know how long it takes for someone to be sure that they have regrown all the hair they are going to regrow after chemotherapy? Also, does anybody have any idea if a place like Bosley hair restoration would perform a transplant on a chemotherapy patient, or do they just deal with natural hair loss?

Several women in my breast cancer support group found their hair came back thinner and that it grows more slowly than they had hoped.

I have seen several young men who unfortunately began to suffer from male pattern baldness as early as their late teens and early 20s. It’s possible that that is why it’s coming in thinner on top for you.

The hair that grow back is very fragile, so you have to treat it like a baby’s hair. Use only a very gentle baby shampoo like Burt’s Bees baby shampoo. Pat dry with a towel. A gentle conditioner would be helpful too (most Burts Bees products are natural and gentle).

Give it a little more time before you seek any intervention like a transplant. It must be hard for a young guy, especially after going through the treatments.

PostHeaderIcon chemotherapy hair loss?

i need help please im 12 and i was on chemotherapy and all my hair fell out so i started to wear my wig but the problem is now people are starting to notice its a wig and i dont know what i should do PLEASE HELP ME i dont want to go to school annymore

Preventing as much of the chemotherapy drug getting to your scalp as possible can do this. This is done using a cold cap that acts to cool the scalp and therefore restrict blood circulating in that area and reaching the follicles. The availability and types of cold cap used varies from hospital to hospital. The cap put on fifteen minutes before chemotherapy to start restricting blood flow, and kept on during and up to 1-2 hours after your chemotherapy. This does mean that your time in the unit is longer.

Not everyone can tolerate wearing the cold cap as it can feel very cold. This discomfort varies from patient to patient so it is not a failure if you can’t wear it and it has no influence on the outcome of your treatment. In other clinical trials to date, less than 2% of patients who had retained their hair did not continue with the procedure.

While cold caps may be effective in preventing hair loss for some chemotherapy drugs they are not successful for all drugs. Your doctor or nurse will be able to advise you.

You can also simply google "chemotherapy hair loss prevention" for other possible solution. Hope this help

PostHeaderIcon why does chemotherapy may have side effects such as hair loss and reduced red blood cell?

Because chemo kills healthy cells as well as cancerous cells. This is the cause of most side effects including those you mention of hair loss and reduced RBC counts, as well as fatigue, nausea, vomiting, etc.

PostHeaderIcon Bought a wig due to loss of hair brought on by chemotherapy. Does it look realistic?

I’m 17, male and have a quite severe form of skin cancer. The cancer has caused my hair to fall out and I’m left with several bald patches which is really getting me down. I know the NHS supply cancer patients such as myself with wigs but I’ve not seen any I like and the one I bought off Ebay looks pretty stylish, I reckon.

Do you think it looks realistic? I’ve always had jet black hair so the colour of the wig is right for me in that sense.

I would appreciate your honest opinions.

Thanks in advance.

oooo, that’s really nice!
:D
Not only does it look realistic, but the hairstyle is very cool, too. I like it!!

Good luck :)

PostHeaderIcon Chemotherapy and hair loss?

I’m about to start chemo. If you’re going to lose your hair, do you lose all of it? I’m talking about will I lose my full beard? Will I lose armpit hair? My leg hair, etc.?
Thanks for all the great answers, and the good wishes.

Pretty much all of it. I kept a little bit of hair on my right arm, a little bit on the legs, a few head hairs, and a little bit of pubic hair (I know, TMI).

It doesn’t all fall out at once. A couple of weeks after the first chemo (if it’s the kind of chemo that causes hair loss) it will start. It will seem like a lot if falling out, but it’s day after day after day. Takes several weeks to have most of it gone.

Good news is, sometimes it starts back while you’re still on chemo. Mine started coming back halfway through my 12-week Taxol regimen. I finished Taxol a month ago, and have enough hair to go without a head covering.

Good luck to you in your treatment.
